Black Men’s Health Fair
On July 5th, the Brutha’s Project sponsored a health fair at Mosswood Park, situated on the corner of Broadway and MacArthur Blvd. A healthy good time was had by all who attended!
The health fair was designed to promote health awareness for African American men and featured non-profits who gave out information and did screening for various diseases.
Cal-PEP, the California Prevention and Education Project, was out in full force, providing free HIV screening, delicious barbecue and music featuring local hip-hop artist Darcsage performing music from Cal-PEP’s “Get Yo Body Checked” CD.
Music was provided by DJ Neon Leon and J- Rush and featured other local artists from the Silence the Violence Campaign, rappers JH-mill-ion, Lil-O and James Columbus.
Other organizations that participated in the Health Fair include the Alameda County Faith initiative, Healthy Oakland, American Cancer Society, Alta Bates, Black Nurses Association, Alameda County Public Health Department, Black Infant Health program, and Get Screened Oakland.
There was even a raffle for a 32 inch flat screen tv.
Although, the turnout was great, more people could have and should have been there. As a community African American’s suffer more from a lot of preventable diseases, such as prostate cancer, diabetes and HIV/AIDS. Alameda County in particular is under state of emergency due to the number of HIV AIDS cases. According to an article published in the Globe by Aqueila Lewis, a Cal-PEP intern, Oakland has the highest concentration of HIV cases in Alameda county and African Americans make up the majority.
We need to be proactive about our health!
Many people site discomfort and embarrassment as reasons to not visit the doctor and not to get screened for diseases such as HIV or prostate cancer.
My only comment to that is: which would you rather face- embarrassment or the possibility of coming down with a disease that can kill you?
None of us are immune. Disease does not discriminate.
Do not let wonderful opportunities like the Black Men’s Health Fair pass you by. It can save your life. ☺
